Why Strength Training Might Be the Most Important Training Method You Never Prioritised

When people tell me they want to get healthier, the first thing they usually mention is cardio.
They've started walking more, signed up for a running event, bought a bike, or promised themselves they'll hit 10,000 steps every day.

And that's brilliant.

Walking, running and cycling are fantastic for your heart, lungs and overall health.

But if cardio is the only exercise you do, you're missing one of the most important pieces of the puzzle.

Strength training.

At Fitness Yard, we believe strength training isn't just about lifting weights or building muscle. It's about building a body that allows you to enjoy life, stay independent and keep doing the things you love for as long as possible.

We Naturally Lose Strength as We Age

From around the age of 30, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength if we don't challenge our muscles regularly. This age-related loss of muscle, known as sarcopenia, is one of the main reasons everyday tasks become more difficult as we get older.

The good news is that this isn't something we simply have to accept.

Research by Liu and Latham, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2022), found that progressive strength training significantly improves muscle strength, physical function and independence in older adults, including those over the age of 70.

That means you're never too old to become stronger.

At Fitness Yard, we don't just train you for the next 12 weeks.
We train you for the next 20 years.

You Don't Need to Live in the Gym

One of the biggest myths I hear is that you need to spend hours in the gym every week to see results.

You don't.

A large review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2022) found that just 30 to 60 minutes of muscle-strengthening exercise per week was associated with a 10-17% lower risk of premature death, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Think about that for a moment.

Just one or two well-planned strength sessions each week can make a meaningful difference to your long-term health.

That's why most of our members train just two or three times per week.
It's not about living in the gym.
It's about being consistent.

Small Improvements Create Big Results

You don't have to become a competitive weightlifter.
You don't need to train six days a week.

You simply need to get a little stronger over time.
That's exactly how we coach at Fitness Yard.

We're not interested in leaving you exhausted after every workout.
We're interested in helping you make steady progress.

Strength isn't built through one heroic session.
It's built through consistency.
-One extra repetition.
-A slightly heavier weight.
-Better technique.
-Showing up again next week.

Those small improvements might not seem exciting today, but over months and years they completely change what your body is capable of.

Strength Changes More Than Your Body

One of the biggest misconceptions about strength training is that it's only for younger people or people who want bigger muscles.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Some of our members join because they want to lose weight. Others want to reduce back pain. Some simply want enough energy to play with their children or grandchildren. Many just want to feel confident walking into a room again.

Strength training helps with all of those goals.
It improves joint health, posture, bone density, balance and everyday movement.
It also supports a healthy metabolism and reduces the risk of falls as we get older.

Research published in Sports Medicine (Hart & Buck, 2019) also found that resistance training has significant positive effects on mental wellbeing, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression while improving confidence and overall quality of life.

In other words, strength training doesn't just change your body.
It changes how you feel.

Confidence Is Earned

One of my favourite parts of coaching isn't seeing someone lose weight.
It's hearing them say:
"I carried all my shopping without struggling."
"My back doesn't hurt anymore."
"I finally got my first proper push-up."
"I never thought I'd be able to lift that."

That's real progress.
Confidence doesn't appear overnight.
It grows every time you prove to yourself that you're stronger than you were yesterday.
That's why we don't judge success purely by the number on the scales at Fitness Yard.
